Storing the seed: paper, metal, split or multisig

Every way people store a seed phrase, with the trade-offs: paper, digital copies, metal plates in private locations, Shamir shares and multisig. Choose for the amount you hold and the disasters you expect.

Two panels: riskier and sturdier ways to store a seed phrase.

IN THIS LESSON · 6 OF 13
BY THE END YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER
  • What is the correct way to verify a seed backup?
  • Why is a seed phrase in cloud storage the most common way large sums are lost?
  • What does a BIP 39 passphrase do?
  • When does the lesson say metal becomes worth it?
  • How many copies of your seed exist right now, in any form, including photos and files you may have forgotten?

Then prove it: a 4-question quiz · a challenge. The lesson marks itself complete at 100%.

After this lesson you can: choose a storage method for your seed with its failure modes written down, and know which upgrades are worth it as the amount grows.

Why this lesson exists

Gauge showing roughly a fifth of all bitcoin estimated lost.
Roughly a fifth of all bitcoin is thought to be lost for good, mostly through lost keys.

Roughly a fifth of all bitcoin is estimated lost, mostly through lost keys. A signer can be replaced; the seed cannot. Whatever you decide here is your bitcoin.

The options, honestly

Method Protects against Fails when Cost and effort
Paper, written clearly nothing digital can reach it fire, flood, fading, a tidy relative, a single location pennies; ten minutes
Photo or file in the cloud losing the paper any breach of that account, any malware on any device logged in; silent theft from anywhere free; the most common way large sums vanish
File on your computer losing the paper malware that reads files, a stolen or dead laptop free; nearly as risky as cloud
Metal plate (stamped steel or titanium) fire, water, time theft if found; a single location $20–$100; an hour
Two metal plates, two private locations all of the above plus a single disaster both locations compromised; forgetting where two plates; a trusted second site
Passphrase (BIP 39 "25th word") a found backup being enough forgetting the passphrase: the seed then opens an empty wallet free; a new way to lose everything
Shamir shares (SLIP-39), e.g. any 3 of 5 one or two shares lost or stolen the scheme being misunderstood by heirs; software support varies several plates; real complexity
Multisig (lesson 8) any single key lost or stolen losing the wallet descriptor; complexity three devices; the most to maintain

What to do, by amount

Scorecard: whether each storage medium survives fire, burglary, remote hacking and decades. Tick means survives.
Tick means the words survive that threat. Nothing digital survives a remote hack.

  • Learning money: paper, two copies, verified by restore. Never digital.
  • Savings you would mind losing: one metal plate in a private place you control (a safe at home, a safe deposit box, a sealed container at a trusted relative's). Verify by restore first.
  • Savings you cannot afford to lose: two plates in two locations, or multisig with each seed on its own plate, plus the inheritance plan from lesson 12.

Two advanced options compared: a BIP 39 passphrase and a Shamir split.
Two power tools, each with a new way to lose everything.
