The immaculate conception

Bitcoin launched with no founder to lean on, no insiders, no company and no price. Every later coin had all four. That cannot be copied.

IN THIS LESSON · 1 OF 8
BY THE END YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER
  • Which of these did Bitcoin have at launch?
  • Why does the founder's absence matter for money?
  • How did bitcoin trade for roughly its first year?
  • What percentage of bitcoin's supply was allocated to founders or investors before launch?

Then prove it: a 3-question quiz · a challenge. The lesson marks itself complete at 100%.

After this lesson you can: explain why Bitcoin's launch cannot be repeated.

Bitcoin's launch had four properties that no later project has had together, and arguably none can have again.

No founder

Satoshi was anonymous, mined in the open on the same terms as everyone else, and left in 2011 without cashing out. There is no person to subpoena, pressure, bribe or hero-worship. Every altcoin has a founder, usually a foundation, often a company, and the project's rules bend toward them.

No pre-mine

Not one coin existed before the public could mine. Compare Ethereum, which sold about 72 million ETH to investors before launch, or the typical token where a majority is allocated to the team and early backers.

Two launches.

No price

For roughly a year bitcoin traded for nothing. People ran it because they found it interesting. It became valuable slowly, in public, with no one marketing it. A project launched today cannot do that; the market knows what a "new Bitcoin" could be worth, so insiders position before anyone else can.

No company

Bitcoin had no legal entity, no treasury, no roadmap and no customer support. That is a feature: there is nothing to regulate, sue or acquire.

Put together, bitcoiners call this the immaculate conception. It is why "a better Bitcoin" is not just a technical question. The fairness of the launch is part of what the money is.
