Privacy and honest limits

Lightning payments are off the public ledger and onion-routed, which beats on-chain. Channels are still public, and custodial wallets see everything.

5 MIN READ
Two panels on what Lightning hides and what it still reveals.
LEVEL · Intermediate
IN THIS LESSON · 6 OF 8
BY THE END YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER
  • What does onion routing hide from a routing node?
  • What is visible on-chain from Lightning use?
  • What does a custodial Lightning wallet see?
  • Of these three, which is written to the public ledger: (1) a Lightning payment, (2) a channel open, (3) a route taken? Enter the number.

Then prove it: a 3-question quiz · a challenge. The lesson marks itself complete at 100%.

After this lesson you can: say what Lightning hides and what it does not.

What Lightning hides

Payments never touch the public ledger. Routes use onion routing: each hop decrypts one layer and learns only the previous and next hop, not the sender or final receiver. Amounts are known only to the parties on the path. Compared with an on-chain payment, which publishes sender, receiver and amount forever, this is a large improvement.

Onion routing: each hop sees only the previous and next hop, not the whole route.
Onion routing: each node peels one layer and learns only its neighbours.

What it does not hide

  • Channel opens and closes are on-chain transactions, visible to everyone.
  • A public routing node's channels and capacities are announced to the network.
  • The receiver learns which node paid (unless the sender takes extra steps), and the sender knows the receiver's node from the invoice.
  • Probing attacks can estimate channel balances.
  • A custodial wallet sees every payment you make. Privacy from the chain is not privacy from your provider.

Honest limits

Scorecard of what the chain, a routing node, the receiver and a custodial provider can each see about a Lightning payment.
Who sees what. Privacy from the chain is not privacy from your provider.

Lightning is still maturing. Large payments can fail for want of liquidity, nodes must be online to receive, and self-custodial setups need backups most people have never heard of. The network has grown steadily in capacity and reliability since 2018, and consumer wallets hide most of the friction, but it is not yet a bank app for everyone. That is the truthful state in 2026.
